The HP Pavilion DM1z is HP’s third generation 11.6-incher. Prior to this, we had the Atom / ION powered Mini 311 and CULV based DM1 which never made it to the US. This latest DM1z sports AMD’s latest Nile platform with either a dual core AMD Athlon II Neo K325 / K625 processor or a single core Neo K125 processor and ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics. All three of these sport the same chassis although this DM1z adopts a new Champagne Gold color rather than keeping the chrome silver color of the first two.

I am actually reviewing a Japanese model, which is really called the DM1a but it is identical to the single core DM1z that is available in the US. The only physical difference is a different keyboard layout.

  • 11.6″ 1366 x 768 display, glossy
  • AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processor (1.7GHz, single core)
  • ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics
  • 2GB DDR3 RAM (1GB on board, 1 free slot, 5GB max)
  • 250GB 7200RPM HDD
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • 10/100 LAN
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
  • VGA, HDMI, 3x USB 2.0, RJ45, shared mic/headphone, card reader
  • VGA webcam
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit + SplashTop OS
  • Altec Lansing speakers
  • 55Wh 6-cell battery (6.5 hours)
  • 1.53 kg / 3.37 lbs

Versions of particular firmware / software tested on this particular model.

  • ATI Catalyst 10.6 and 10.7
  • BIOS versions F.04 (default) and F.13 A (8-13)
  • Flash 10.1
  • Mostly tested with auto fan BIOS option set to off.

The 3D Mark scores were surprising to me. I didn’t realize that ION2 was so good.

Your review summary is coming up as private, can’t be viewed…

The alienware has an nvidia 335m and 3d mark scores in the 5000-6000 range, you must have meant a different laptop

You are right. I had the wrong score for this. Updated.

We are comparing to ION 1 and integrated graphics. What is the surprise? :)

    Nice review :)

Hopefully the new AMD Ontario Platform chips do better.
