If Sony had actually announced a tablet it would be focused on content. Back in May this year, Sony did say they were encouraged by Apple’s success with their iPad but they were going to play the waiting game, still not that convinced there’s a good market for tablets. Nothing has changed come today according to this (translated) interview with one of Sony’s top men Kazuo Hirari but he did express his desire on how to stand out in the to-be crowded market with tons of players.
Kazuo believes in a strong content network in order to topple the iPad, and that’s where Sony’s Playstation Network will come into play. They’ve got the infrastructure all ready to go with a 50 million userbase and the content – video, tv shows and music.
So, will they continue to eye the market and see how other competitors fare or will they release something quickly, unlike their actions in the netbook market? The interview is machine translated so much of the meaning is lost but it seems there doesn’t seem to be any regret on Sony’s part for a very late entry into the netbook market (with the Sony Vaio W) since the netbook market is already over according to them (they gave Japan as an example) and consumers are going back to buying their higher profit notebooks.
