Apple is trying to snag the iPhone5.com domain by going through the World Intellectual Property Organization. Currently iPhone5.com is a forum for rumors on the up coming smartphone from Apple. Fusible spotted the domain claim, case number D2012-0951 if you want to do a little more digging on your own, but for now the case remains “active.”
In the past Apple has waited until shortly before the launch of a product to try to grab domains, it’s understandable since grabbing domains lets the world know what you’re planning on naming the product. There are rumors that Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5 this fiscal quarter, possibly at the company’s developer conference, WWDC. The conference is being held June 11-15 in San Francisco where Apple says it will “share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion.” The more likely truth is that Apple has learned its lesson about grabbing domain names early since iPhone4s.com was being used to aggregate porn.
