Last week Intel quietly released a new version of MeeGo that now offers support for their latest Atom platform, Cedar Trail.  We have yet to see an official release of Tizen, the next iteration of this mutated Linux platform.  So if you’re keeping track, MeeGo v1.2.0.6 is ready for download for Intel x86 netbooks.

Taking a closer look at the release we have the un happy news to report that graphics driver is just the kernel portion and a closed-source user-space, which basically translates to, this upgrade lacks any mainline ambitions. And rightfully so, we are curious to see if anyone will be releasing a MeeGo based Cedar Trail Netbook.

The Cedar Trail update for MeeGo was confirmed by Gordon Jin of Intel China in this mailing list message and can be downloaded from MeeGo.com.

At that point I’m curious to see if anyone will be releasing a LINUX based Cedar Trail Netbook.

MeeGo is the closest you’ll likely see for awhile.  The lack of open source drivers for the Cedar Trail GMA 3600/3650 prevents full functionality under regular Linux.

They mainly managed it for MeeGo because before Intel gave it up for Tizen they had already developed drivers for GMA 500/600 for Oak Trail based systems, which like the new GMA’s are based on a Imagination PowerVR GPU.

Though you can get Linux to work with Cedar Trail, you just won’t have full graphic functionality with existing drivers.

By the time Windows 8 comes out we should start seeing ARM based systems starting to come out.  So ARM Chromebooks and Linux based ARM systems can be an alternative to keep a look out for, at least until the 22nm Silvermont comes out next year.

Since it’s rumored that Intel will go back to a GMA based on their own technology, specifically a more basic version of the GMA used for Ivy Bridge, along with many other enhancements to the ATOM architecture to look forward to…
