Here’s a cute holiday “leftover”: Samsung partnered with a robotics company, RT Corporation, to make a robot for a Christmas promotion at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo. Officially called Galaxy XMAS HUGS and nicknamed “Hug-chan”, the robot uses a Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet for its “face”, and a Galaxy S II LTE smartphone for its “heart”. Actually, using the processing power of both of the Samsung devices, the Hug-chan robot is able to dance, sing, and of course, hug visitors to the Samsung Galaxy Café at Roppongi Hills.
In the video below, you can see the robot being put together and demonstrating its hugging feature.
A website posted by Samsung shows video recordings of the 3011 people who came to see and hug Hug-chan at Roppongi Hills. It’s cute to see their reactions to the hugging robot.
If you’re interested in more details about how Hug-chan was constructed and controlled by the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S II LTE, you can check out Samsung Tomorrow. They have a good write up and a behind-the-scenes video of Yuki Nakagawa, founder of RT Corporation, explaining how Hug-chan works (it’s an English-language video).
