The Lenovo LePad K2 running Nvidia’s unreleased Tegra 3 platform was benchmarked using GL Benchmarks and the results aren’t great. First if you’re wondering how we got a hold of these results, basically someone at Leveno screwed up. When you run the GL Benchmark using the free edition the results are submitted to a public community database for the world to see.
We were stated to see a significant improvement with this release since the GeForce GPU in Tegra 2 featured four pixel shader units and four vertex shader units; in Tegra 3 the number of pixel shader units doubles while the vertex processors remain unchanged. This brings Tegra 3′s GPU core count up to 12. These benchmarks show Tegra 3′s GeForce graphics processor calculating complex 3D scenes and comparing them to Tegra 2 and the improvement is significant however when stacked up against Apple’s products, things aren’t looking as rosey.
The iPad 2 & iPhone 4S have Apple’s A5 processor which tout the graphics performance of the PowerVR SGX GPU 543MP2 and Tegra 3 doesn’t even come close.
Nvidia has been saying that its Tegra 3 processor runs 3x faster then Tegra true, Heise-Online points out that in a footnote on their site this number is measured with GLBenchmark 2.0 Egypt. The Lenovo LePad K2 running Tegra 3 is able to achieve 63.1 fps and Tegra 2 musters 24.1 fps which is actually a factor of 2.6, if you round up its close to 3X the performance. This is actually insignificant since Tegra 3 doesn’t stand up to the performance in the iPad2 which is 88.8 fsp compared it its 63.1.
The 10.1″ Lenovo LePad K2 is running Android 3.2 with a very interesting screen resolution of 1920 × 1152, this is probably not the actual resolution of the device since this number happens to match the maximum resolution of Tegra 3. This screen resolution isn’t taken advantage of in the GLBenchmark 2.1 since regardless of the resolution of the display test are always running at 1280 × 720 pixels so they won’t be slowed down by the vertical synchronization. This provides us with some very meaningful 720p results.
Looks like Tegra 3 still has a lot of work to do to catch up to Apple!
