Amazon has gotten more than enough news coverage for its upcoming Kindle Fire. It’s one of the most anticipated Android tablets ever, and it’s not even a full-featured tablet at that! It just shows the power of Amazon’s growing ecosystem, and perhaps people’s disappointment at how kludgy and unsatisfying some Android tablets have been. Of course, the $199 price point doesn’t hurt, either.
Even before the Kindle Fire was officially announced, there were rumors that Barnes and Noble would announce their follow up to their wildly-popular NOOK Color, perhaps even release it before the Kindle Fire’s announcement. That didn’t happen, but now we have some strong rumors being reported that the NOOK Color’s follow-up will finally be announced on Nov. 7. Given that the NOOK Color was released around Nov. 19, 2010, this Nov. 7 date seems quite plausible.
The Digital Reader claims to have 3 different sources (supposedly Barnes and Noble employees, not just vague “sources familiar with the matter”) who have said that not only will the new Nook tablet be announced on Nov. 7, but also the Barnes and Noble bookstores themselves will undergo some changes to create a brand-new, flashy, boutique-like section of the store specifically devoted to all of the Nook devices, including the NOOK Color’s update.
There are no other concrete details regarding the device. Strangely, in these leak-ridden times, no specific details about the new NOOK Color hardware have come out. While we previously reported on a rumor that there might actually be two new color tablets from Barnes and Noble, precious little else has been said about the new hardware. Either Barnes and Noble is extremely good at keeping this secret, or perhaps there isn’t as much clamoring for Nook news now that cheaper Android tablets exist, and the NOOK Color has lost that niche interest.
Either way, Nov. 7 is coming up quickly, so we’ll soon see just how Barnes and Noble is going to hit back at Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
