Pre Central is reporting that people who bought the HP TouchPad from Amazon, even from way back on July 21, are being notified of automatic refunds for the price difference.

This is interesting since most retailers only honor price matching within 30 days (or less) of purchase. Furthermore, Amazon doesn’t seem to have an official price match policy of this kind to begin with. Here is the e-mail that some Amazon buyers have received:

Hello,

We’re writing to let you know that the manufacturer has lowered their price on the HP Touchpad Wi-Fi 32 GB 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer. As a result, we’ve issued a refund of $405.52 for the difference in price on your Order #XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX

Refunds are applied to the payment method used for the original purchase and typically complete within 2 to 3 business days. Thanks for buying this from Amazon.com. We’re happy we could offer you the additional discount.

Sincerely,

Customer Service Department
Amazon.com

Since the HP TouchPad’s launch day was on July 1, you may not get a refund if you bought it then, but let us know if Amazon still dished out the refund for you!

Around the time of the Great TouchPad Fire Sale, HP encouraged retailers to refund the price difference between the original $399/$499 prices and the discounted prices of $99/$149 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively. However, retailers were not obligated to do so. Good on you, Amazon.
