MeeGo found its way back into the news recently as version 1.2 got released on Thursday this week. As has always been, the vanilla releases are for OEMs to build upon and tweak to their liking with support for Intel Atom and ARMv7 (ARM Cortex) architectures but that doesn’t stop you from trying it out yourself.
This release updates the Netbook and In-vehicle infotainment UX (user experience) and core SDK to v1.2 and adds the tablet UX developer preview. I’m hard pressed to tell what’s really significant about this release so I’ll quote chippy at MeeGo News who follows the OS closely:
Meego 1.2 is not just another release. It is, in my opinion, the first build which satisfies the requirements for a core operating system that can compete in todays mobile computing ecosystem. Multi-touch and security subsystems will be included and at last, independent distributors can do final testing on products they are likely to have been working on since 1.1 was released last October. read the rest
A preview of the tablet UX for MeeGo 1.2 from earlier this year:
MeeGo 1.3 is scheduled for release this October but before that we’ll be hearing more about the OS as the MeeGo conference hits off next week in San Francisco, May 23 – 25.
