If you’ve got a Xoom and are anxiously waiting for the 3.1 update but have yet to see anything you can try to trick your Xoom into getting the update earlier. In Honeycomb, there’s an “About Tablet” menu in the main system settings. There, you’ll find an option called “System Updates.” Tapping it typically lets you know that your system is up to date — in other words, that no updates are waiting for you. If you check regularly, however, you’ll notice that the system doesn’t actually refresh the status very often; even if you reboot, the last listed check-in may still be from several hours ago.

So here’s the fix:

1. Head into the Xoom’s main system settings menu.

2. Select “Date & Time.”

3. Uncheck the box that says “Automatic Date & Time.”

4. Select “Set Date,” and set the date forward by a couple of days.

Once you’ve done that, power your Xoom down, then turn it back on. Now go back into the “About Tablet” menu and tap “System Updates” once more, and you should see that the “last checked” time is much more current than it was before. Remember, though, that the Android 3.1 update is likely rolling out in waves, so it may take a few days to reach everyone; this trick merely lets you make your tablet check in more frequently than it would by default.
