New York Times has heard that Microsoft will be announcing new Slate tablets at CES 2011, in early January, from various manufacturers including Samsung and Dell. There’s also word that Windows 8 will make an appearance, too, maybe on a tablet or some other device.
There’s a few details on the Samsung slate and it sounds like the ‘Gloria‘ – it’s described as similar in size to the iPad although not as thin, with a unique and slick keyboard that slides out. It’ll run Windows 7 and will use a ‘layered interface’ when the slate is held in portrait mode with the keyboard hidden. There’s talk about a de-centralized app store on these slates. One person has heard that Microsoft is encouraging developers to adopt HTML5 for tablet apps and host them on their own websites. There’ll be a search interface to find these apps.
As for Windows 8, nothing said about it although Engadget has heard from numerous sources that this version is the key to Microsoft’s “real tablet strategy” with an new “all-touch” interface but it won’t be out until H2 2011 or early 2012.
