Apple unveiled its an 11.6″ inch MacBook Air (MBA) today, this new Macbook had been subject to much Speculation and rumor, with many people wondering if Apple was gutsy enough to sell a computer that, size wise, falls perfectly into the Netbook Category. As far as internal components go? Its no Netbook. Base configurations packs a 1.4Ghz Core 2 duo (Upgradeable to 1.6Ghz) , 2Gb of DDR3 RAM (Upgradeable to 4GB) , a 64Gb SSD (Upgradeable to 128Gb) , and an NVIDIA GeForce 320M. As for screen resolution? Basic 1366 x 768 for HD viewing. Battery life is rated at 5 hours, which is about what the first generation, 13 inch MBA had. It is Available today on Apples Website starting at $999.

    Internal comments… “It’s no netbook”

By your logic, a dual core Atom and ION in 10.1″ form factor isn’t a netbook. Put 2 gigs of ram in that same computer and it’s really not a netbook. Fast forward to next years Atom. Faster yet! Fast forward to the new AMD for netbooks. That’s going to be the fastest yet. So, again, falling by your logic, these certainly aren’t netbooks.

So, do netbook have another year of life? You and others will kill them off as they get faster. They will get faster so therefore, yeah, their end is inevitable. Interesting logic.

The european prices is ridicoulous I pay 1458 USD worth of our currency for the 11.6 with 64GB ssd

Yes and no. In my personal opinion, the specs this is boasting, I would call it an “Ultra-portable” To be safe. But size wise? Its a netbook. A Core 2 duo and Geforce 320M, thats really pushing things. The Netbook definition has been fragmented over the last two years with all these new Processors and Screen size. Its become Gray area, open to interpretation.

So lets just call it a “Netbook” Happy now?

  • Benny

Its bad. But you can always have some one you know in America pick it up for you and take it back to Europe.

great specs for 2007, call me Apple when you get an i3+ in there.

if im going to pay this much for a laptop that means im going to keep it for a couple years, but by then this device will be the equivalent of a 5yo laptop.

somewhere, Jobbs is ordering toilet paper made from compressed orphans tears…

Well said. And so the rest of us will just have to make do with $300 Netbooks.

Netbooks are primarily defined by size factor. The introduction of the Atom Platform certainly did something to add itself to the definition. However, with the increased use of Intel CULV chips in sub 12″ Inch computers, the definition has been blurred. So perhaps calling it an “Ultra-portable” is properly fitting?

Nah lets just call it a Netbook. Happy now?

Generally, an educated consumer will pick a computer with a processor fitting to their needs. It seems though that Apple decided to do everything to keep the price on this as low as (Rationally) possible. So that a student, or say average Joe/Jane with some extra money could get a taste of beautifully crafted aesthetic and decent performance without breaking the bank to much.

Consider how much the first gen MBA cost when it went on sale.

Although a newer core i3+ could certainly offer better battery life and performance.

Thats quite a large sum for base model. You could always have a friend in the US pick it up for you and bring it you.

heh, I mean no offense with my commentary. Perhaps I need to be a bit more softer edged. I’ve been on a bit of a warpath of late regarding “netbook” and “premium netbook”. Here’s the main issue which is ultimately going to affect all the bloggers and sites out there covering netbooks. Collectively, the rigidity in the use of “netbook” is going to cause the segment to die off. Think about it, because in fact I’m correct on this. People may not care, but in reality, your sites will lost complete relevance because the netbook niche will become laptops and notebooks. It’s better to think now than later on this. I know that I’m right. Not to sound cocky about it. As I’ve been trying to advocate, netbook is secondary computer. An expensive or fully souped up netbook can be a premium netbook (cnet really started the premium netbook usage). Laptops at one point were the portable secondary computer, but they now lose out to netbooks. The ONLY reason this ulv, culv, ultrathin, thin and light rubbish exists is because of the companies wanted to make a premium secondary computer and because bloggers keep calling and tarnishing netbooks are being underpowered. Guess what? Last time I checked dual core wasn’t considered underpowered…Peace.gemasteraka gmanps. I know I’m right about this ;-)

    Maybe your right. Maybe not.

I could also just, you know, accuse you of trolling and win either way :)

I could also tell you to stick your post… (edited for politeness)

After reading your comment, this tell me all I need to know about your journalistic abilities or should I say lack of abilities. Calling one of the few regular posters on your site a “troll” is in a word, stupid. I know nothing about yourself other than you really have no respect. Be who you are, but pissing off people who participate on your (yeah not your) blog or might click on your banners is painfully stupid. If you don’t see that, then that tells me even more.

Way to go in building up your loyal reading fan base. Way to encourage people to post on this blog by calling somebody a troll. Is there some derogatory slang I can throw your way too? Make a few more unintelligent posts and I’m sure I can come up with something.

    In closing, go … yourself.

    Cheers!

Should I be more shocked that you took that, meaningless comment personally or that I have the basic decency of making an Apology based on an irrelevant comment?

Fine then. Deeply sorry if I offended you with this statement “I could also just, you know, accuse you of trolling and win either way :) ” Hence the smiley face at the end in no way shape or form had anything to do with there being no sinuousness in that comment.

When it comes to insults/slurs there isn’t room on the internet for interpretation. Humor or lack of humor doesn’t translate. For example if I can someone a “stup*d a**hole” and end it with a smiley face, it doesn’t remove the slur. In other words, why would anyone run the risk of being really offensive over a slur if they meant the slur as a joke anyway? Best idea is? Don’t use the slur and there is no misunderstanding.
