Have a New Laptop? Don’t Forget to Do These 8 Things

Unpacking a new laptop is always exciting! You just can’t wait to see what it offers and how it works. We understand this perfectly, but no computer is ready to work right out of the box. Learn eight things you should do before you can fully enjoy your new gadget.

Setting up a new laptop in 8 easy steps

We know you’d probably like to start using your new laptop as soon as you unpack it, but sometimes patience really does pay off. Setting up your new computer now will simply cause you fewer problems in the future. But what should you do? We’ve put together a short checklist of the most important steps to keep in mind.

1. Check the outside of the laptop

Your new laptop probably looks shiny and ready to go, but it doesn’t hurt to check it carefully. Open your new laptop and inspect it from all angles. Check for flaws, such as scratches or dents. Push the keys to see if they squeak or are hard to press. Take a close look at the hinges.

If the laptop has defects, it’s better to exercise your consumer rights now and return it to the manufacturer for a refund or a new device as soon as possible.

2. First configuration

After starting your new laptop (don’t forget to charge it!), the system will ask you to enter some data, such as your username, time zone, etc. It’s an easy process—the system will guide you through all the steps necessary to set up the device, so you shouldn’t have any problems.

If you’re using Windows, you’ll be prompted to log in to your Microsoft account and use its online features. Doing so provides some useful options, but some people prefer local accounts because they offer more privacy.

If you don’t want to use a Microsoft account, we recommend setting up your computer without an internet connection. That way, it won’t be able to push you to use the online features.

3. Check and install updates

Your new laptop may be ready to go after the initial setup, but there may be some updates that need to be downloaded and installed. Don’t ignore this step. Updates are essential to keep your computer secure, as they often patch various security vulnerabilities. They may also include new versions of drivers that are necessary for best performance.

4. Look at the settings

Windows systems have several default options that are worth changing. Go to “Settings” and look through all the options. It may be overwhelming at first, but honestly, it looks more intimidating than it really is.

Windows settings are pretty straightforward, and you shouldn’t have any difficulty understanding what each option does. You can always leave an option unchanged if you don’t know if it’s worth changing.

We recommend paying special attention to the privacy and security options (also found in “Settings”).

5. Look through installed apps and de-bloat your laptop

All new laptops come with pre-installed software. Sometimes it’s useful, but sometimes companies are simply paid to include crappy programs that just take up space. Go through the installed applications and remove the ones you won’t use.

Take your time—you don’t want to delete useful software accidentally. You may also want to leave some trial versions that may come in handy someday. If you don’t know what a particular program does—open it or find out more on Google.

6. Install security software

Before you start using the internet fully and downloading other programs, install security software. An antivirus program is a must. Typically, the built-in Windows 10 and 11 Defender is sufficient for most users, but if you want to use something else, this is the time to set it up.

This is also the ideal time to configure other security programs. We recommend you take time with this step and properly secure your laptop. For example, you can install a VPN for additional safety. It will route your traffic through a secure VPN server via an encrypted tunnel, which can be really important if you intend to use your laptop out in public places and connect to the internet via public networks.

7. Install your favorite programs

If your computer is already secured, it’s time for the most enjoyable part—downloading your favorite software. Start with your preferred browser and utilities. If you need specific applications for work, this is also the time to install and configure them.

If you have data that needs to be transferred from another device, also do it now. The easiest way is to upload it to cloud storage and then download it using a new laptop or simply transfer it using an external drive.

8. Enjoy your laptop!

Once all settings are properly configured, the laptop is finally ready to go. Start exploring the internet, using software, and taking full advantage of the potential of your new computer. If you have the opportunity to register your new purchase, do it as soon as you have some free time. It may give you additional warranty time.
