Two rumors over at Apple Insider from someone who has been correct on a few occasions about the iPhone 4 having twice the RAM and double the screen resolution, which then became known as the ‘Retina Display’ at launch. First is news (again) about the iPad 3 display and another of a tablet larger than an iPod Touch but smaller than the iPad.

Initially, rumors pegged the iPad 2 with a higher resolution display but as we draw closer to a year on from the original iPad launch, rumors have that display shifting to the iPad 3. The latest is no different – the iPad 3 will have the same 9.7-inch display, with IPS but tacks on FFS (fringe-field switching) for wider viewing angles and better clarity under sunlight (which is probably just higher brightness) with a resolution double that of the current iPad – 2048 x 1536. The panel was originally intended for the iPad 2, which is probably why we heard of the rumors in the first place, but Apple weren’t happy with the cost and availability of the panels. The iPad 2 display will have the same 1024 x 768 resolution as the current iPad but it’ll be thinner, lighter and have some kind of “anti-reflection” for a better viewing experience outdoors.

If the next rumor turns out to be true, we might see a smaller sized tablet, larger than an iPod Touch and smaller than an iPad get released in the latter half if this device ever makes it past the evaluation stage that it’s currently rumored to be in. Apple Insider is putting their money on a enlarged iPod Touch rather than a mini iPad.
