Criteria used for evaluation

It’s very hard to find a budget laptop for science (at least the budget would have to be increased slightly than when looking for a usual laptop), and they can be a pricey investment but very well worth the price they cost.

While 8 GB of RAM is decent,16 GB is always better for data analysis and that’s what we recommend. If you find a laptop with 32 GB, that’s even better.

Quad-core processors are a requirement. The dedicated graphics card is desired, depending on the type of algorithms and software you’ll be relying upon.

Size & Resolution

The next step is to pay attention to size and resolution.

Why size and resolution? You’ll want your laptop to be very thin and lightweight.

The screen is going to be your point of view where you will have the sight on the whole process.

We highly recommend going for the IPS backlit display for the best viewing experience and most comfort.

We highly recommend sticking with the most official and most commonly used operating systems which are either Mac OS X or Windows.

These operating systems will 99.8% have every software or plugin you need in order to do your work, while you might struggle to find it on other operating systems such as Linux.

If you decide to opt-in with Mac OS X, you won’t have to worry about the version of the OS, yet we only recommend you to stay up to date with the OS updates (which aren’t very often).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the system requirements for data science?

We would recommend at least 8 GB of RAM, dual-core processor, and a dedicated graphics card (or a very good integrated graphics card chip – ideally i5 or i7).
Plenty of storage space, ideally SSD type or a combination of both SSD & HDD, or even SSHD version.

Is 8 GB of RAM enough for data analysis?

The minimum recommended RAM is 8 GB for data science and analysis, but just to be on the safe side – we recommend sticking to 16 GB.

Are gaming laptops good for data science?

Yes, definitely. Gaming laptops aren’t only made for games. In fact, gaming laptops feature powerful configurations that are ideal for data analysis. However, keep in mind that they’re most of the time on the heavier side and might sacrifice the battery life a bit.
