Picking the best Laptop For Nursing Students 2023

Performance

Even though nursing students don’t require a high-end laptop, they definitely require reliability which comes as a perk of a decent or even high-end laptop configuration.

While graphics card definitely isn’t important, we find the RAM, processor, and even storage to play a very important role and that’s exactly what every nursing student should look for. I suggest choosing a Core i5 or Core i7 rather than Core i3.

Having a quick processing power that can handle any type of work no matter where you are will offer the most reliability which is often combined with versatility.

If you find a laptop that offers all of that and even includes great connectivity – you’ll never regret your choice.

With modern technology and even the ability to upgrade laptops, finding laptops with such performance aspects isn’t a hard thing to do and you’ll find every laptop in this post meets the same requirements.

Screen Size & Resolution

Depending on the portability levels you’re looking to achieve, you’ll either want to stick with a very small, medium, or a large laptop. We recommend either sticking with a very small or a medium laptop – so anything between 11″ and 15″ is acceptable.

This will allow you to get great portability and versatility, have as powerful components as you can wish, and even a great display that you shouldn’t forget to check.

With the modern technology involving, we recommend you to go for at least full HD display, LED if not even IPS. You’ll be working and studying for hours using the laptop student so ensuring you get a great vision and rested eyes.

Also, if you plan to get a high-end laptop, getting a great screen will be important since you are most likely going to be able to achieve 4K resolution. In such a case, we highly recommend going for the IPS OLED type of display.

Touchpad

Not everyone loves to use an external mouse, and if you’re investing your money in a laptop – better make sure that the touchpad is very responsive, feels smooth, and that it even features an ability of multi-gestures.

In some cases, you’d want to make sure that the touchpad can recognize more than one touch at the same time.

Having a touchpad which will feel great and won’t be a problem is important since you’re most likely going to study and do your homework on a go – and even if you like using an external mouse, you won’t have the time or space to constantly carry it with you.

What we would also like to recommend you to pay attention to is the placement of the touchpad area, so you get the best of both keyboard and touchpad use.

Connectivity

While you’ll be working most of the time from your school library, at home, and even outside – you’ll want to have a laptop that is full of ports and has increase connectivity.

You’ll most of the time be required to connect your laptops to school devices such as a printer, scanner, or even a projector (since you’ll be doing a lot of presentations), so you’ll need a laptop that doesn’t sacrifice the connectivity.

Yes, of course, you can aim for both versatility and connectivity, but be aware that some laptop manufacturers sacrifice the number of ports for versatility or weight. We recommend you stick with a laptop that has great connectivity and at least a few USB ports of both versions USB 3.0 and USB 3.1, HDMI, card reader, and even ethernet port (if you find it necessary).

Storage

Just school files and documents can build up over time and fill up the laptop’s hard drive pretty quickly, and the thing about that is, you won’t be able to delete important files and documents.

Therefore, you’ll need to find a laptop that comes with pretty large storage space. We recommend going for at least 256GB if not larger drives. The fastest type of HDD (hard disk drive) will do well, but if you aren’t on a limited budget – we highly recommend going for the SSD drive version.

SSD (solid state drive) will still give the same amount of space, but it will be more efficient, speed up, and increase your laptop’s performance by a notch – which is highly noticeable.

If you’re going to combine a laptop for college students with your entertainment in the free time – you better get twice storage space than you think is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you get a laptop for nursing school?

If you’re about to start a nursing majors and you’re wondering whether you would need a laptop – we highly recommend you to get one. Even though your school might not have told you this yet, but you better prepare yourself than being too late. Also, you’ll notice every other student helping themselves with a laptop.

Is 256 GB of storage enough for nursing majors?

256 GB of storage is definitely enough for nursing majors, and that’s the minimum of space we advise nursing students to get whether it’s an SSD or HDD (hard disk drive) type of drive. Make sure to get a lot more storage if you’re going to use your laptop for entertainment purposes and you’re looking to store a lot more than your school files and documents.

Is a touchscreen useful for nursing students?

The touchscreen is still a feature that isn’t available in every modern laptop there is – but if you get the chance to find a laptop that is within your price range. It’s a great feature that will replace multi-gesture use on your touchpad to accommodate your typical tasks on the screen which is more efficient and even faster.

Are Chromebooks good for nursing students?

Chromebooks are inexpensive options for people on a budget. They are essentially lighter  laptops with limited specs that focus more on portability.

Additionally, Chromebooks are laptops or tablets running on Chrome OS, a Linux-based operating system. Because of this Chromebooks tend to lack the features and compatibility of other laptops with programs that work well with MAC OS or Windows.

But this isn’t entirely a negative because chromebooks generally run smoother and better than Windows. This is because Chrome OS is lighter and has less features than Windows 10, so despite their lower specs Chromebooks tend to run as smooth as other Windows laptops that are more powerful.

In short, Chromebooks are ideal for nursing students who want to be light on their feet. They may not be powerful but they are just as efficient as other laptops that run on Windows.

Should I buy a tablet or a laptop as a nursing student?

Well it depends.

If you’re a serious nursing student who only plans to use their gadget for studying, taking down notes, and contacting your colleagues, then a tablet is a good choice for you.

Tablets are lightweight, portable, and they can do all of the things mentioned above. Of course they’re usually cheaper than most laptops which is a big plus for students!

Laptops on the other hand are the exact opposite. They’re usually heavier and more bulky than your typical tablets. What they do have is power though. They can be used to run resource intensive software so if your school requires you to operate medical software, then a laptop might be a better option.

There’s also a third choice here which is both. There are tons of convertible laptops out there that can function both as a laptop and a tablet. So if you have the cash to spare, then you can experience the best of both worlds.

  1. First things first! Make sure you’re even allowed to have it in class. I’ve done 2 of 4 semesters so far where we would get kicked out class or clinical for the day if we had so much as a Fitbit on our wrists. Not sure why but some professors are very much still paper and pen professors. Check first!

I personally use the iPad mini but only because I work at the hospital that we do clinical at, was given an iPad for free, and everything there is on Mac.

Several people I know use the surface pro and love it.
