Broadcom’s Crystal HD aimed at N450-based netbooks – Computex ‘09 Sneak Peak Video

NVIDIA’s Ion technology is definatley catching the spotlight on the advanced graphics in the netbook ecosystem, but Broadcom’s no stranger to the space either. After giving Acer’s Aspire One HD playback capabilities that it could only dream of just months prior, the company’s newly announced Crystal HD platform could provide Intel’s Atom N450 with the multimedia boost it badly needs. We don’t know exact specifications yet, but we have heard that “top-tier OEMs including Asus, Dell and Samsung” will be using this into their upcoming N450-based netbooks. What this means to your netbook performance is the BCM70015 promises “near flawless” HD video playback, including support for Flash Player 10.1 and Blu-ray.

We’re told to expect it to start popping up in forthcoming machines throughout 2010, but at Computex 2009 we came across Cyberlink using an unnamed Broadcom Chipset to do HD playback on a netbook. Now this is not an Atom 450, but it does demostrate the possibilities of Brodcom’s HD technology over 7 months ago.
