Duracell Outs Universal Netbook Adapter
July 30, 2010
For those of you who constantly switch between multiple netbooks, read on, if not, well a universal netbook adapter ain’t going to do you much good.
Duracell has jumped into the netbook market but they aren’t shipping batteries, no, they are shipping universal AC adapters for them. This gets you a 40-watt brick with a set of four tips (auto 12V – 19V) which apparently work for hundreds of models including all the popular netbooks from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP / Compaq, Lenovo and more. Portability and power consumption are also key points. It weighs 9 ounces and consumes less than 0.5W of juice during down time.
The Duracell 40-Watt Universal Netbook Adapter will be available at pretty much any online retailer at the start of August, priced at $50. Amazon.com has it up for pre-order.

Designer Gives Thumbs Up To ASUS Eee PC T101MT As SketchPad
July 30, 2010
Every digital designer or artist worth their salt has a Wacom tablet of sorts, as with YouTube user sunguckim from Korea. He does all his sketching on a Wacom Cintiq, or well he used to at least. Now, he uses an ASUS Eee PC T101MT instead as he shows in the video below:
Not bad at all, the end result. He claims that he gets 70% of the quality of the Cintiq but at a quarter of the price, and it is much more portable, too. He does state that input is delayed and not very precise.
Indeed, the T101MT could pass as a cheap portable sketchpad but you’ll have to get used to not resting your hand on the screen as well as getting used to the lag and lack of accuracy, and that’s about as good as it gets, don’t expect to do anything more fancy than sketches as it lacks a lot of the cool things Wacom tablets have such as high levels of pressure sensitivity and accuracy or angle detection.

Intel Shows Off Chips Transferring an HD movie in 1 second
July 29, 2010
Yesterday Intel announced that it has created a breakthrough data-transfer technology using a combination of silicon chips and lasers to transfer data over a fiber optic cable at a speed of 50 gigabits per second. Copper wire’s top transfer speed is about 10GB a Second, Intel Silicon Photonics Link is fast enough to transfer an HD movie in one second, or transfer 1,000 high-resolution photos in a second, or a 100 hours of music in a second, or send 45 million Tweets. We thought that USB 3.0 is going to change the way we deal with data and that is only offering 4.8GB a second transfer speeds.
It will take Intel some time to perfect the manufacturing of the device. But it now has all of the necessary building blocks for hybrid silicon and laser components to commercialize silicon photonics. Want to see it in action? The video is below. [Read More]

The Best Sony Vaio Clone Ever

Every now and then you hear about a netbook clone from popular manufacturers over in China but most of the time they have questionable build quality and the labelling gives it all away but not this time.
Shanzai company Jumper Computers is selling a Sony Vaio netbook clone that looks as good as it would have come from Sony. Heck, it even has the real fake logos plastered on. You could show this to your average computer newbie and they’d fall for it. [Read More]
Sharp’s New Chip For Dual Display Netbooks, Smartphones & E-book Readers
July 28, 2010
In recent years, I’ve seen a few dual display devices like MSI’s 10-inch dual display netbook or the 7-inch version but most, if not all of these never get pass the prototype stage. Very few that I’m aware of have made it to market like the Entourage Edge and then there’s the Toshiba Libretto W100 that is coming out next month. The situation might change if Sharp has anything to do with it – they’ve developed a 2nd generation chip that can power dual displays, and play two different 1080p HD videos at 1080p resolution output via HDMI.
Sharp plans to sell this chip to the smartphone, e-book reader, netbook and photo frame markets. They have already given out samples with mass production starting in September so I guess we might start hearing about this chip next year.
Too bad they couldn’t show more pictures of that dual display prototype shown above.

US Gets Cheap Android Tablets from Kmart for $150 (Hands On Update)
July 28, 2010
Update: The Android Blog has spotted one of these at Kmart and posted up a hands on video. The experience is summed up in two words – slow and unresponsive. As with the GenBook smartbook, you get what you pay for! Hands on video below:
Dirt cheap Android tablets have been lurking around certain countries in Asis for a few months now. But the US has yet to really get any tablets other then the iPad, even the Dell Streak has yet to officially hit the streets over here. It looks like you won’t have to rely on eBay or random import companies to provide your Android tablet fix, Kmart is selling an Android tablet for $149.99. [Read More]
$99 Smartbook Spotted At Kmart, Bought & Tested
July 28, 2010
Kmart is back in the spotlight! Yesterday a company you’ve most likely never heard of until now – Augen – made an announcement that they would be selling $150 Android tablets in the US (though no one has spotted any in stock yet) although they didn’t say a word about their GenBook which is already selling at Kmart (no product page up at Augen though).
The Augen GenBook is a small 7-inch smartbook and if you have been following netbook news for a while then you may have seen your fair share of devices looking exactly like this one. It looks and feels cheap, has a cramped keyboard, an awkward touchpad and there’s a fat screen bezel that could have fit in a larger display – reminds of the first 7-inch Eee PC 701 netbook.
Now, being a smartbook, there is no Windows or Intel processor on board. It runs Android 1.6 but it’s extremely slow with it’s 400MHz processor with 128MB RAM. To be honest, the OS experience seemed rather awful (lots of things not working) in the hands on video over at Engadget.
But hey, it’s only $99 – you get what you pay for, right?

Ramos W7 4.8-inch MID with access to the Android Marketplace
July 28, 2010
Our friends over at Shanzai.com have unboxed the Ramos W7 last week and put it through the paces to give us their review. The Rockchip video performance was solid enough at 480p but fell short on handling 720p. If YouTube is what you are after, they were pleasantly surprised by the video play back in the unpolished UI. It is running Android 1.5 which is a bit disappointing since we’re all focused on 2.1 or 2.2. Here is the video and below that you can find the specs. [Read More]

AMD Fusion May Be USB 3.0 Ready By Launch
July 27, 2010
Right now ASUS is leading the pack when it comes to USB 3.0 adoption on netbooks and ultra-thin notebooks, but only for Intel based systems. With AMD’s Ontario based Fusion chips (combining GPU and CPU) re-scheduled earlier for a Q4 2010 release this year we might be seeing AMD based devices with USB 3.0 at launch.
Word from Digitimes is that AMD is in talks about licensing USB 3.0 and is considering integrating it into an upcoming southbridge that will go together with Fusion chipsets.
