Netbook have a small screen and optimizing the browser is important for a greater internet browsing experience. I will run you through a set of options and add-ons I use to improve the total browsing experience using very simple methods.

To start with, all these options are available in one package called the “Mozilla Add-on Collection : Netbook Optimization Kit”. Download : http://www.netbookfiles.com/8815/mozilla-add-on-collection-netbook-optimization-kit/ Once there, you will have the option to install each add-ons as you wish or you could download them all. I would advice going to the above link using your installed version of Firefox to make the installations more smooth.

I will run though all the addons with screenshots so that you get the idea of which add-ons you want to install off the collection.

1. Hide Caption Titlebar Plus (Smart)
This is an interesting add-on and is a must for all netbook / tablet users. This particular add-on will remove the title-bar  and captions which would actually increase a lot of viewing space for browsing.

Look at how the title-bar disappeared from the active window. Now we have a Chrome like titlebar for Firefox and it eliminates the title bar when Firefox is maximized

2. Toolbar Buttons
This particular add-on is a button pack for Firefox and other Mozilla products.  This extension adds buttons to the Customize Toolbar Window of Firefox. To select different buttoms you mush right-click on the toolbar and click Cuztoize.

Some of the buttons are a must requirement and you should use this add-on. Among many some of the important buttons are -Show Bookmark Menu,  -Toggle Image Loading, -Toggle Embedded Content Loading. These buttons will improve the loading speed on the pages you visit.

3. Fission
This add-on will compile the progressbar into the address bar. I recommend changing the default color scheme of the progress bar for XP users. For Windows 7 users to use the slider progress would be better.

4.Omnibar
Many might have a different opinion about this add-on but I would recommend it if you want a bit more space for typing web addresses or searching for a long phrase texts. Omnibar integrates the address bar and the search bar into one bar with a larger width. In the Omnibar preference I would suggest changing the display option to check point “Rich(Default)” to get detail results from history.

5.Hide Menubar
This add-on is not available on the collection that is mentioned above. But this is an important add-on which further increasing your viewing space. Hide Menu Bar automatically hides the menubar and you need to press the [ALT] / [F10] key to show it temporarily. 6. Tabs on Top
This allows Firefox to have a outlook much like the Chrome browser. Using Tabs on Top will  make your tabs to reach the top of window! For easy clicking I would suggest you combine this with “HIDE CAPTION TITLEBAR PLUS” addon. Download : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13091/

As always, feel free to leave a message via comments and I will try to respond to all your queries as requested.

A major strength of Firefox is the ability to install add-ons. Unfortunately, this depletes its default swiftness, an effect is more noticeable on a netbook and tablet PC.

As noted elsewhere, an alternative to tweaking Firefox for these applications is to use K-Meleon or K-MeleonCCF ME. Although these support minimal add-ons, both of these are faster than Firefox and have much more compact interfaces that are friendly to low resolution displays. Both of these use the same great rendering engine from Firefox, Gecko, but strip out all of the XUL stuff in favor of native OS bindings, which leads to a smaller memory footprint as well. I’ve been using these browser in Windows for years to squeeze out usefulness from legacy hardware.
