Dell is starting off the year with the sale of ultrabooks featuring Ubuntu Linux. Dell wants to set off “Project Sputnik” this fall with the Dell in a special version with Ubuntu Linux 12.40 for developers. Initially, the ultrabook will be available in only limited quantities. More recently, they started a sort of beta program, so that interested developers can get the XPS 13 with Ubuntu for a reduced price.
In the fall, “Project Sputnik” will leave the beta phase behind and the “regular” sales will start. Dell is still calling the XPS 13 with Ubuntu a developer unit, but at least there is hope that the system will sooner or later be available for everyone in the US and beyond. It is not the first time that Dell will be selling laptops with Ubuntu Linux. A few years ago, a number of devices had this program installed, including some netbooks. Dell currently offers only devices with Microsoft Windows pre installed. Perhaps that will soon change.
