It was bound to happen, now we’ve got some predictions for when exactly tablets will out ship notebooks.  Currently tablets are going to hit 347 million units shipped in 2012 and sky rocket to over 809 million units by 2017.  So if NPD DisplaySearch is right then tablet shipments will surpass notebook shipments in 2016.

While notebook shipments are expected to increase from 208 million in 2012 to 393 million units by 2017 and tablets are expected to grow from 121 million units to 416 million units in the same period.

Thing big reason for tablets high adoption rates is growth in mature markets like North America, Japan and Western Europe, these markets will account for 66% of shipments in 2012 and remain in the 60% range through 2017.  DisplaySearch expects tablet growth to go from 80 million units in 2012 to 254 million units by 2017.

    Which is it?

Tablets: 347 million units shipped in 2012 and 809 million units by 2017 or 121 million units to 416 million units

I suppose these numbers: 80 million units in 2012 to 254 million units by 2017 are for the US, Europe and Japan only.

    A bit confusing, ain’t it?

347/809 is for what they call for all “mobile” devices, while 121/416 is for Tablets only. 80/254 is for mature market Tablets.
