There have been whispers of a Snapdragon S4 shortage for a while now. Qualcomm has been silent on the subject and has never acknowledged the problem– until now. The deal is inked and underway: Samsung will aid Qualcomm in the manufacturing of the 28 nm chips for the Snapdragon S4. Keeping up with the demand Windows RT devices are expected to generate would not have been easy for Qualcomm alone. Business certainly makes strange bedfellows, but this is a smart move for Qualcomm.
There is strength in numbers and Qualcomm’s band of partners shows the proof of the old adage. In addition to United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), Qualcomm has enlisted Samsung and TSMC. By joining forces, Qualcomm hopes to meet the large demand for the 28-nm SoCs. The exact conditions under which Samsung will help manufacture the S4′s are wrapped up tight in a cloak of silence.
