Dell has just launched two new Ultrabooks the XPS 14 and XPS 15 which offer good battery life, high performance, built-in security in a thin enclosure that kind of reminds us a bit of a Macbook. The two new devices join the XPS 13 which has also recently hit the street.

The XPS 14 claims to have up to 11 hours of battery life and sports a pretty sexy edge-to-edge display which are constructed with Corning Gorilla Glass. Intel Ivy Bridge processors are of course on board which combine graphics and a processor in a single chip.

The XPS 14 has a machined aluminum chassis with a silicone base, it is 20.7mm thick and has a 14-inch, 400 nit high-definition display, a backlit keyboard, and options for better graphics. It has a 500GB HDD and a 32GB SSD.

The XPS 15 has a display that is 75 percent brighter than standard panels, a backlit keyboard and even has the option for a Blu-ray drive. Under the hood we’ve got a Terabyte hard drive storage and a 32GB SSD or the option for a 128GB SSD. The XPS 14 weighs 4.6 pounds, and the XPS 15 weighs 5.79 pounds.

The Dell XPS 14 has a starting price of $1,099 and the XPS 15 begins at $1,299 and both available today in the U.S. on Dell.com and in select countries worldwide.

The 15 inch is 2.63 Kg. How is that an ultrabook? Many 15 inch laptops today are lighted than that. The Sony Vaio S series is 2 Kg and considered a normal laptop. Ultrabooks should not have optical drives. Period. The new MBP is 2 Kg as well. Dell needs to seriously step up their game if they want to compete.

Only the 14-inch is an Ultrabook, the 15-inch is not.
