Price Predictions for the Microsoft Surface Tablets: ARM at least $600, Intel Over $800…WTF!?!

We have a new report from DigiTimes that has them once again, venturing onto thin ice. Their information says that Microsoft’s new tablet will be priced well at the top end of the price scale. The reason for these high prices would seem to be strange and risky for Microsoft, but once again, the information is questionable, so don’t put your money on this. Specifically, DigiTimes’ sources say that the cheaper model with Nvidia Tegra 3 ARM platform will coast at least $ 599, while Intel model is expected to be at least $ 799.

If the prices are accurate, how did Microsoft come to these numbers? It’s simple: Based on the prices of other similar devices is easy to see what they’re getting at. No one knows why the ARM model is to be so expensive and the Intel model so low in comparison. Tablets with the Nvidia Tegra 3 platform already exist in the U.S.- like the Acer Iconia Tab A510 with Android 4.0 and an otherwise similar features at a much lower price of $450. The “Windows tax” would be in this case, at least $ 150 and it seems a very high estimate.

As the price for the Intel Core i5 “Ivy Bridge” equipped with the Windows 8 Pro-Model of the Surface tablets? Even more simple: the “sources” of DigiTimes simply take Microsoft’s statement that it wants to price the tablet at Ultrabook level prices literally and claims they’ll be “over $ 799″ at least. If Microsoft wants to compete with the iPad, the price range seems a little over the moon. So. That’s the bizarre report for the day, make of it what you will.

Shocking? Nope. Bidness as usual. Microsoft prices everything they can price (and get away with it) at rape levels. Everything Xbox, anything proprietary.

Compared to iPad 32GB that seems reasonable which also costs $599 and that’s without free Office 15 apps, no full size USB port / HDMI / microSD port / 2×2 antennae. In the keynote it did sound like the cover would be included and not an accessory but not sure yet.
The build quality is clearly better as shown in demo than Android devices which don’t come with Gorilla Glass 2 or Office 15 so I don’t think it’s >$150 just for licensing.
The Windows 8 Pro device does not really compete with iPad since it offers full notebook functionality. But +$200 would seem lot better priced compared to RT (bigger battery + CPU and higher res display + ink pen). But not so sure this is credible pricing yet.
Microsoft used to lose money on each Xbox they sold and those prices were quite high in the beginning. I doubt Microsoft intent is making money on this, rather to create initial halo product.
But let’s wait for the real pricing to be revealed. If too high for your taste you can always go with the Asus/Acer RT devices.

If true it’ll likely be DOA. The thing that they do have going for them however is the brand name still has a lot of power with consumers and thus they may be able to get away with premium pricing. MAYBE.

The Acer A700 will cost $450 (shipping pretty soon) and that will come with a full HD + gorilla glass display, while the WinRT Surface will come only with a 720p display.

So the tablet part of the A700 is significantly better than the Surface. At least $50 better due to the HD screen.

I don’t think that Office/WinRT is worth $200 especially since we don’t know if it is not some ultra-limited edition. Moreover, WinRT practically has no apps while Android has a HUGE app directory.

We may be living in a different universe.

Android devices not coming with Gorilla Glass? Almost all of the big-name Android tablets come with Gorilla Glass (Acer A700, Transformer Prime…etc)

Build quality better than Android devices? Like the Transformer Prime? Let me just tell you that the WinRT machine will have a VERY hard time coming close to the build quality of the Prime or the Zoom or the Toshiba Excite.

Moreover, the WinRT Surface machine’s looks are not in the same league with the current high-end Android tablets. First of all, it comes with either that boring grey or some childish vivid colour. Compared to the Prime it looks like a toy computer. Also, the case seems to be made from plastic, while the Prime and the iPad has high-end aluminium cases.

Perhaps A700 is cheap and iPad and Surface is normal price:-). Regardless we don’t know exact pricing and if keyboard/case is included. Acer will also have Windows 8 tablets and that probably gives you better comparison (my guess also around $600).
But I’d skip RT anyway and go with full windows since that’s where this really differentiates. $800 seems reasonable to me especially with digital inking (but price is just speculation).

You have not seen the demo: it’s magnesium alloy. They spend good amount of time how the case is built. Techod and other sites said A700 has non-premium feel about it but great bargain.
I don’t get the WTF in the title. Someone is wildly guessing price is between iPad and Android. If the keyboard is included it would be closer to Android.
