Small form factor computers are slowly starting to pop up and VIA has announced one today that will turn a lot of heads with its $49 price point. The APC Android PC system is built on a Neo-ITX board and isn’t shy of connectivity ports. We’ve got a full size VGA, HDMI, 4 x USB 2.0, a gigabyte Ethernet, micro SD card slot. It is powered by a VIA WonderMedia ARM 11 SoC running a 800MHz with 2GB of NAND Flash and 512 DDR3 SDRAM.
Since Android is not actually meant to be used as a desktop system the Android 2.3 edition has been optimized for keyboard and mouse input, and comes with a browser & YouTube capabilities that include 720p. We got to check out Angry Birds in action and there were a few other apps pre installed, what exactly will appear at launch will be more apparent closer to launch.
The form factor of this PC is also a new one, if you’re familiar with the mini ITX form factor Neo-ITX is about half as big at 17cm x 8.5cm. This complete PC on a single board can be housed in any standard Mini-ITX or microATX chassis so the modding possibilities are nearly endless. Another feature that made us take note is the power consumption of the entire unit comes at 4 watts when at idle and 13.5 watts at maximum load.
There have been a series of these miniature computers hitting the street over the past few month, the most famous is Raspberry Pi which isn’t actually much cheaper at $35 and only comes with two USB ports and a 10/100 Ethernet controller. APC clearly has a lot more options with its variety of connectivity ports. Devices like these really appeal to the DIY and modding community what they really indicate is potential, we’re going to be keeping a close eye on these projects to see what crazy contraptions you guys come up with.
You’ll be able to order this versatile little beast directly from VIA which is actually an interested piece of news on its own. Check www.apc.io if you’re looking to pre-order, details should be appearing shortly.
