Droidcon 2012 in Berlin maybe be a small event with only 1000 or so developers but they are clearly important enough to get a product launch. Sony announced the Xperia Sola smartphone with a 3.7-inch Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, NFC and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich promised for the summer months. What sets the the Xperia sola apart is that it features “floating touch” navigation, which enables “magic” web browsing without physically touching the screen. It also means that you can use the handset with your gloves on. It’s too bad this feature wasn’t released at the beginning of the winter not the beginning of spring.

The device also comes with two NFC Xperia SmartTags in the box, which owners can use to launch a pre-configured profile on their smartphone. The two SmartTags included with the handset can be personalized with up to 10 commands. The Xperia sola will be available worldwide in black, white and red in the second quarter of 2012.

We were lucky enough to get hands on with a pair of gloves at Droidcon. It’s a very interesting feature, you need to start out with a gloved finger and once you use your actual finger it won’t recognize the glove anymore. It’s a great feature I hope to see in many more handsets in 2012.
