Ever accidentally tried to plug in the power cord from your other netbook you have lying around the house? Probably not unless you’re really into gadgets or you review them as part of your job or you have a family that you’ve bought multiple netbooks for.

Well this one unlikely example may be a thing of the past if the IEEE has anything to do with it. They’ve begun an initiative to standardize netbook power supplies – one supply to power them all, so to speak. One goal is  lower waste by not having to buy / have a power supply for every netbook purchase. Still baby steps but there is already support from giants Acer, Asus, Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Pegatron and Inventec.

On the other hand, power supply makers won’t be too thrilled about this outcome should it turn into reality. I also can’t imagine netbooks selling without power supplies. Just imagine taking your brand new netbook home and finding a note saying power supplies are sold separately!

There are already multiple power supplies on the market that are compatible with multiple netbooks such as this Kensington Power Adapter for Netbooks but they can be expensive and don’t support every netbook out there.

I'm a big fan of the newer, tinier, mobile-phone wall-wart style power supplies shipping with some netbooks lately. I was quite pleased to be able to trade in my in-line brick from my AO150 for the small thing that came with my new AO521. I wouldn't relish having to go back to an in-line brick, no matter how small or universal, as I don't like all the extra cabling that comes with them, nor do I like the bulk of the charger's mass resting halfway along the cord to my 'book. That's my preference though.
