Pixel Qi, the company making that magical dual-mode LCD / E-Ink screen, put the first batch of their DIY screen kits on sale at Maker Shed earlier this week and they were all snapped up double-quick.  Now some cheerful modders are starting to receive their kits and install them inside compatible netbooks.  For now only the Samsung N130 and Lenovo S10-2 are officially supported, although now these things are in the wild you can bet they’ll be crammed into every device with vaguely similar form factor.

Tech Blogger Jesse Vincent was one of the first to drink the Kool-Aid, even going so far as to buy a Samsung N135 especially to install the screen in.  His results are encouraging indeed – he reports the installation was relatively painless and the screen looks great when viewed in daylight.  Now we just need to wait for some battery life benchmarks – according to Pixel Qi’s figures battery life could be improved by about a third with their screen in E-Ink mode.
