HTC is slated to be the first 3rd-party company to receive Sony PlayStation certification for their devices. About a year ago, Sony announced their initiative to grant PlayStation certification to other manufacturers of Android smartphones and tablets. This would grant them access to Sony’s back catalog of PlayStation games. It seems that HTC is the first to bite.

HTC’s PlayStation certification is slated to become official in the second half of this year. An announcement from HTC or Sony could be forthcoming at Mobile World Congress later this month, but at the moment, HTC told Pocket-lint they couldn’t “comment on rumors or speculation”, when asked about the certification.

HTC has been struggling of late, losing out to other Android device manufacturers like Samsung and ASUS. They recently said they would concentrate more on making fewer, but higher-end devices instead of flooding the market with device after device as they’ve done in the past. Perhaps combining PlayStation certification with their existing Beats Audio technology will help HTC differentiate their products and win back some of the customers they lost.
