Earlier rumors surrounding when the iPad 3 announcement might be held only said sometime in early March, with a possible release date a week or so later. Rene Ritchie from iMore is now quoting “sources who have been reliable in the past” that say the 3 announcement will be held on March 7, a Wednesday, which apparently is a traditional day for Apple to announce such things. Ritchie also postulates that the upgraded Apple 6 system-on-a-chip of the iPad 3 will be quad-core, though there are various conflicting reports about this.
Other rumors surrounding possible iPad 3 upgrades put forth that the iPad 3 will have a Retina Display, a larger battery (to keep battery life in line with previous iPads, even though the display will require a beefier processor), and maybe an upgraded rear camera. It wouldn’t be totally surprising if Siri support is added as well. If previously-leaked rear housing components are to be believed, the iPad 3 will have virtually the same design as the . LTE 4G support was also bandied about, but it doesn’t seem likely that the iPad 3 would get LTE before the next-generation does.
