Dexcon Wireless Glucose Meter

Usually we don’t lead with slogans, but this one is too cute, “Think of it as your Persona diabetes G.P.S Glucose Protection System” It is a wireless bandaid with a tiny needle that continuously monitors your Glucose levels for 7 days before you have to change the bandaid with wireless transmitter. Qualcomm is working with companies such as Dexcon to enable these cadillac health care devices with wireless connectivity.

What i found interesting about his talk was the from a technological stand point there was more that could be done, but the FDA in its wisdom is opting on the face of privacy over pure geek joy. These smart bandaid devices could run to mobile phones or run constant data streams, but its the details that are stopping it, and we are thankful for it. If one were to run the data to your mobile phone, then the FDA would have to approve the phone, so if a mobile app were to be created, each phone that it was installed on would have to be submitted for approval. Having a stand alone device dedicated for the medical purpose isn’t such a bad thing. I mean during the same presentation I learned about an aspirin sized pill that used stomach acid to power a battery and transmit information!

The future of heathcare appears to be right around the corner and its wireless enabled medical devices. To learn more about this product please visit the Dexon Website.
