When the iPad 2 first came out, a lot of people, including myself, were rather smitten with the “gadgetyness” of the Smart Covers. They attach magnetically, protect the screen, can lock and unlock the display just by closing or opening, and can fold into a useful stand. It’s a rather ingenious accessory, but the price is a bit steep for what it is, at least in my opinion.
Miniot soon came out with an interesting wooden version of Apple’s Smart Cover, but its design was rather different, and didn’t exactly provide the same stand positions as the original.
It’s still a great product that’s well-made. But what if you want something that’s more like the original Apple Smart Covers, but made out of wood like the Miniot covers?
Well, an Etsy seller called D. Fauber Woodsmith has you covered (pun intended!). Besides some nice-looking wooden business card cases, D. Fauber has various wooden “smart cover”-like products for both the iPad 1 and iPad 2. And considering the quality of the materials and craftsmanship, this product is priced better than the Apple Smart Covers, in my opinion.
These iPad 2 covers are offered in several different types of wood: mahogany, cherry, walnut, bubinga, and lacewood, to name a few. They also have a distressed leather lining so that the iPad screen isn’t scratched up, of course. According to D. Fauber, the cover folds inward so that the leather lining isn’t exposed when in stand mode, keeping the lining clean.
The covers range in price from $86 to $99 USD, which admittedly is pretty high for a Smart Cover, but again, look at the materials and craftsmanship! If you have a friend or family member looking for a nice cover to protect their iPad 2, I would highly recommend considering this one. I haven’t bought one, but I’m strongly considering it myself.
