The rumor mill surrounding the iPad 3 seems to have shifted into overdrive, with more and more reports claiming that the iPad 3 (or whatever the next generation of the iPad will be called) is due in spring of 2012.

Actually, the timing suggested by the rumor mill isn’t really that surprising. The first iPad came out in April 2010, and the iPad 2 was introduced in March 2011, so if Apple keeps up with this release schedule, it stands to reason that the iPad 3 will come out in either March or April 2012.

If this is so, Samsung will still be on track to beat Apple to the market with a very high-resolution tablet (2560 x 1600 px), planned to be announced and released around February 2012.

The iPad 3′s most likely update will be to move up to a Retina Display. As such, the iPad 3 will supposedly be slightly thicker than the iPad 2 to accommodate the heftier hardware upgrade. There likely will be a processor upgrade as well, necessary to drive the higher-resolution screen, possibly a quad-core processor to match Android tablet competitors? We don’t know for sure.

So if you’re in the market for an iPad, you would probably be best served holding off purchasing one until spring. At the very least if the iPad 3 doesn’t hold your interest, the iPad 2′s prices will likely come down around the same time.
