The Samsung Galaxy Note is a pretty interesting and innovative hybrid device from Samsung. It has a huge 5.3″ screen with Wacom digitizer technology, enabling very precise stylus input. It is meant to be both your phone and your tablet, as well as your day-planner, digital scrapbook, and journal.

Samsung already has some pretty cool stylus-optimized apps built-in to the Galaxy Note, but they touted from the beginning that they would release an SDK for the S Pen so that third-party developers could make their own S Pen-optimized apps. Some developers have already gotten their hands on the SDK and updated their apps to work with the S Pen. As we reported last month, OmniSketch, Comicbook!, and Sooner Workplace are third-party apps that will be (are?) available for the Galaxy Note.

The SDK was slated for a December release, but it seems Samsung is eager for developers to get started, because the SDK is available now, a few days ahead of schedule.

Version 1.0 of the S Pen SDK is available here for download. It enables developers to set up a drawing/writing canvas, enable pop-up windows for settings, like pen width, opacity, line color, eraser settings, and use undo/redo commands.

As we’ve mentioned before, Ice Cream Sandwich has its own built-in stylus support. However, the Galaxy Note currently runs a modified version of Gingerbread. Samsung’s stylus support is all custom. We don’t know if Samsung plans to allow the Galaxy Note to be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future, or whether the S Pen SDK will somehow be updated to work with Ice Cream Sandwich. But for now, it seems that developers will have enough to work with to create fun and useful S Pen apps for the Galaxy Note.
