Intel’s Keynotes are usually about innovation and not so much about asking existential questions, but this keynote seemed to do just that while talking tech. First there was alot of talk about breaking the 4 minute mile and how it was a mental thing, once one person did it, 16 people went on to do it that year. Pretty touchy feely if you ask me, but hey, if you have figured out a way to emotionalize silicon all the power to you. As my heart string were warmed by Intel’s drive to move forward I was hit with another big perspective changing question. What does it mean to be a musician? What is an instrument?

Matt Serletic from Music Mastermind took the stage and showed us how he can create full tracks of music with instruments using only his voice and a Moorestown powered tablet. The software enables people to create full-blown, professional-sounding songs by singing into tablet, then using a software band to provide the backing track. And it does so with the look and feel of a video game.

Music Mastermind is based on Unity’s engine for 3-D animated games and gives amateurs a way to translate the melody in their heads into a song they can share while creating a community around the game. So anyone can be a musician using a tablet and feel the adoration of being a rock star.

Congratulations Intel, you’ve just given me an existential crisis over my morning coffee.
