A lot of the lower-end, lesser expensive Android tablets coming out of China have favored using the Rockchip processor. And since Honeycomb was never open-sourced, these Chinese tablets had to make due with Froyo and Gingerbread. However, a new video has surfaced, supposedly showing off Ice Cream Sandwich running on a Rockchip-based tablet.

Now that Ice Cream Sandwich has been open-sourced, we will likely see a much better balance between high-end and low-end tablets running the same OS. This will allow consumers of all budgets to consider an Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, not necessarily having to sacrifice the latest and greatest OS and features just because it falls out of their price range.

However, with Android tablet prices slated to fall by mid-2012, I still think it’ll be harder for the Chinese manufacturers to compete when the tablets from the bigger names like Asus fall under $300 or lower.
