Finally, an Android Commercial That’s Not Weird and Obtuse [video]

The recent Android phone commercials have been rather low on actual features and spec information. Mainly they’ve been either weird, like the recent HTC Rhyme commercials (though admittedly they do mention features of the phone in a vague way), or short action films that really tell you nothing about the phone, like the Motorola DROID RAZR commercials.

Really, HTC?

I admit the Droid RAZR "action movie" commercial was kind of slick, but it doesn't tell you anything about the phone itself.

While sometimes that’s a good marketing tactic to use to get people’s attention, when it comes time for them to actually select an Android phone, of which there is an overwhelming number, some hard facts about features and specs would be helpful. And in the case of features versus specs, features would be preferable to many prospective buyers, especially those who are not as tech savvy.

Google just released a nice short commercial for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus that clearly shows off major features of Ice Cream Sandwich, including Face Unlock, Android Beam, Voice Typing, Google+ Hangouts, and the panorama mode on the stock camera app.

Yes, some could argue it’s a little bit like Apple ads, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. It’s not overly sweet, or hipster-ish, or whatever like Apple ads can be; it’s just simple, and very demonstrative about what the Galaxy Nexus can do for you if you buy it. It also shows that many different kinds of people would like the Galaxy Nexus.

The commercial appeals to both people who’ve been waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to be released, as well as people who didn’t even know the Galaxy Nexus existed. And like it or not, the whole point of the marketing in this case is to reach as broad an audience as possible. I think this ad accomplishes that way better than the HTC Rhyme or Motorola DROID RAZR commercials do.

Simple ad touting Ice Cream Sandwich features. And at the end, there's a URL where people can learn more. Amazing!

Check it out below and let us know in the comments whether this is the kind of ad you like to see, or whether you prefer the flashy action movie-type ads that have been shown in the past.
