I’m of the mindset that cameras in tablets larger than 7 inches are sort of a useless feature. Most people who have larger tablets probably also have smartphones which would be a lot more manageable for taking quick snapshots, or even more artistic shots. If you have a 10-inch tablet, you know how awkward it would be to hold it up at different angles to frame a shot. However, I know there are valid use cases, like if you’re a student taking notes in class on your tablet and want to snap a quick photo of notes/diagrams on the whiteboard.
But beyond the fact that manuvering a 10-inch Slate in order to take photos is rather awkward, most 10-inch tablets’ rear cameras have pretty awful image quality. So even if you were to take photos with your Motorola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the picture quality isn’t going to rival that of basic P&S cams, or some higher-end smartphone cameras.
Well, Asus is trying to change all this with their Transformer Prime. Not only does the device have a really stunning design, Ultra thin and light form factor, and quad-core power, it seems Asus has packed in a very nice 8-megapixel camera as well.
Asus has posted some sample photos from the Transformer Prime on Facebook. I am quite impressed by the image quality! Even in lower-light situations, the Transformer Prime does remarkably well. Granted, sample photos are always shot in ideal circumstances, so we’ll have to wait until there are some more “real world” examples to see if the performance is still as good. But given that a couple low-light shots were uploaded, and they look decent, I’m still thinking Asus has a great camera in the Transformer Prime.
With a camera that has image quality as good as this, I would be more likely to use it. At least the quality of the snapshots would balance out the slight embarrassment of using the rear cam on a 10-inch tablet!
As more and more information about the Transformer Prime gets doled out, it becomes clearer and clearer that Asus has a real winning product on its hands.
