A while ago Polaroid discontinued all of their film cameras and instant film production, disappointing Polaroid lovers everywhere (including me!). While the Polaroid Z340 is not a resurrection of Polaroid’s iconic instant film cameras, it is a digital version that is intriguing to consider.

Polaroid Z340 digital camera with ZINK instant printing technology

The Z340 is a 14-megapixel camera with an integrated ZINK (“zero ink”) thermal printer that spits out 3″ x 4″ prints. The 2.7″ LCD viewfinder makes framing photos and then editing them right on the camera quite easy. The Z340 has built-in photo editing features to crop and add custom borders to your photo before printing. And the prints come out fully-developed with a smudge-proof, water-resistant coating. This camera combines the instant feedback of a digital camera, with the convenience of on-the-spot prints that Polaroid’s film cameras use to provide. But the key difference is that you can pick and choose which photos to print to avoid wasting “film”.

The 14-MP Polaroid Z340 is available now for $299. 30-print packages of the ZINK “film” cost $19.99. Considering the cost of printing out your own photos, or buying prints somewhere days after an event, the cost of the digital Polaroid prints are competitive, since you have the convenience and fun of printing out photos instantly, even before you’ve left the party. So not only can you physically share your photos at the party, you can also upload those photos later to your favorite photo services without the hassle of scanning in prints. Best of both worlds.

If you are interested in buying the Z340, or know someone who’d love to try a digital shout-out to the Polaroid instant film cameras of old, you can pick one up from Amazon right here. This would definitely be a fun holiday gift!
