Ethernet over Powerlines has so far not quite lived up to its expectations, but the new Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit from Belkin might change this.
Although there aren’t much in the ways of technical details right now, Gigabit speed over power lines is a huge jump in speed over the previous generation which was rated at 200Mbit.
You need to use the Ethernet port on your computer to connect to the adapter, so on netbooks that only have 100Mbit Ethernet, you might not be able to take advantage of the full speed, but you should at least get the full 100Mbit, something the older 200Mbit Ethernet over power line adapters couldn’t deliver.
At $149.99 for a pair of adapters, it’s not cheap technology, but if you got problem with WiFi in your home, or if you’re looking for something faster than even 802.11n WiFi, this might be the perfect solution. The kit is available in the US now, with Europe to follow in August. You can find the product page here
