Intel was in full force pushing the Ultrabook category at IDF 2011 and we got our hands on the Toshiba Portege Z830 and our buddy JR Nelson over at notebookreviews.com lent us his Macbook Air to shoot a comparison video.

The Toshiba Portege Z830 will come with a full range of CPU options from Core i3 to i7 and will offer up to 6GB of RAM and an eight-cell 47Wh battery inside. The keyboard is both backlit and spill-resistant, a 1366 x 768 display and a 1.3 megapixel webcam in the lid. Also onboard are three USB ports — one 3.0 and two 2.0, one of which does sleep and charge — an Ethernet jack, HDMI and VGA output and an SD card slot. There’s also the obligatory 802.11b/g/n WiFi radio, along with optional Intel WiDi.

The 2011 Macbook Air offers the Intel Core i5 1.6 GHz ( Dual-Core ) with 2 GB / 4 GB (max), 1366 x 768 screen resolution with a 64GB/128GB Solid State Drive, wifi, Bluetooth, Thunderbolt, 2x USB 2.0 and a composite audio in/out jack.

Checking out the gallery of photo’s below as well as the hands on comparison video definitely puts it into perspective that the Ultrabook is in direct competition with the Macbook Air.

last night i saw two mac book air as i while helping two friends pick laptops.i never been into the mac thing.looking at it i tought of the upcomming asus ultra as i thought to myself what is intel really up with glut of chips they have.none of these are going to be upgradeable at all,not ram,nor battery, nor HDD.on the other hand netbooks been kinda tough to do a ssd upgrade like on my 1001p however the newer laptops are either large trap door or not that hard to open up.but these ultrabooks as nice as they look dont solve the 3 major problems i see most people really want.
    1.drop tested….able to withstand a drop from 2M.
2.water resistant and mosture…..go to south asia with one and you see what i mean.
    3.shock resistant.
none on the market make such a product and i know what your thinking a ssd right but ssd have nand chips like ram chips they hate mosture and humid places so we need sealed ssd like automotive circurts normally are.
if intel wants to sell chips they need to stop copying steave jobs game plan as it is zero befit to intel when mac buys intel.
intel should push a 1 child per program.
that to me would make perfict sence and remodel the netbooks so every child in every nation could benfit and so could the industry as a whole.
ultrabook to me is another fad like UMPC.
    dead in two years.
