One of the casualties of HP’s discontinuation of webOS hardware is the Touch-to-Share feature that they demoed at the Think Beyond event last February. The feature allowed a Pre 3 and TouchPad to share URLs and other information wirelessly by touching the two devices together. The HP Veer was supposed to get the Touch-to-Share capability via software update, but currently it hasn’t been released. I haven’t yet heard any news about lucky European Pre 3 buyers being able to use the Touch-to-Share feature.

At any rate, there’s news from the Microsoft BUILD conference about an NFC demo showing off a similar feature to Touch-to-Share that they called “tap to share”. It’s not definite whether this will be Microsoft’s official name for the feature once Windows 8 is final. The demo itself was pretty simple: an NFC-capable card was tapped to a prototype tablet. The card sent the URL for the official BUILD conference website to the tablet.

Clearly NFC is the next trend for mobile devices; the Windows 8 demo at BUILD for “tap to share” is the tip of the iceberg. It’s frustrating to see webOS features show up on other platforms in different ways, just proving that webOS has a lot of potential that has yet to be realized.
