Samsung took a moment during IFA 2011 to squash any outstanding rumors claiming that they are interested in buying HP’s webOS.

Samsung CEO Choi Gee Sung said that he doesn’t like that, “acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion”. Samsung already has its own mobile operating system, Bada, and recently announced three new smartphones running Bada 2.0. Of course, Samsung also relies heavily on Android for their smartphones and tablets, so it’s clear that Samsung doesn’t need yet another mobile OS.

It was a nice idea to think that Samsung might adopt webOS for their mobile devices, especially given Samsung’s latest products like the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tab 7.7. These devices have great hardware. Clearly Samsung fleshed out stylus support for the Galaxy Note, not just making it an afterthought. It would’ve been interesting to see what they would have done with webOS.

However, now that Samsung seems to be out of the picture, who now is the next candidate to buy or license webOS? Perhaps HTC? They would be another popular manufacturer with great hardware that could make compelling webOS devices. HTC Sense UI has its fans, but is it enough to show that HTC can successfully handle developing their own OS as well as their own hardware? And given their strong partnerships with both Microsoft and Google, would it be in HTC’s best interest?
