What we’ve heard so far about the Amazon tablets indicates that their 7-inch tablet will launch first, in a month or two and the 10-incher early next year, if not at the end of this year. Today, Digitimes confirms that the 7-incher will indeed be shipping first. That one is expected to be available in October – it’s being supplied by Quanta Computer. The 10-inch tablet, on the other hand, won’t be shipping this year but as expected, in the first quarter of 2012 next year – that one is being supplied by Foxconn Electronics.
The 10-incher, codenamed “Hollywood” is expected to sport Nvidia’s upcoming “Kal-el” quad-core processor while the 7-inch “Coyote” tablet is expected to sport the dual-core version of Nvidia’s chip. The tablets are expected to sport high quality displays, with a focus on e-reading (the 7-incher) and sell at a loss – one report mentioned “hundreds less” than the lowest end iPad 2 while another mentioned up to 20% – 25% off. There as been no acknowledge of either tablet yet from Amazon yet.
Amazon’s first 7-inch tablet will be going head to head with Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Color so it’ll be interesting to see how Amazon prices its tablet against the Nook Color which costs $249, but then again, the Nook Color should be due for a refresh soon – it’s already approaching its first birthday in November. Some folks have been expecting a new tablet from B&N this year.
