The HP TouchPad, despite HP’s recent announcement of its discontinuation, enjoyed a huge surge in popularity when HP decided to put most of its stock on clearance for $99 (16GB) and $149 (32GB). For better or for worse, there’s great interest in putting Android on the TouchPad. The very first step towards getting a CyanogenMod 7 (or CM7, as it’s more commonly known) build of Android has been achieved, as can be seen in the video below. It is in alpha, or even pre-alpha, mode since the developers don’t yet have the touchscreen working. However, CM7 does boot, rather quickly. Supposedly the CyanogenMod team is working on a multi-boot ROM, so that you can choose to boot into webOS, Android, or other platforms, potentially. If the CM team can get such a multi-boot ROM going, the HP Touchpad could become quite the multi-faceted tablet! There’s already a way to run Ubuntu on the TouchPad, within webOS. Adding a CM7 Android ROM as well as other platforms would be many a geek’s dream.
The CyanogenMod team released this very brief video to get interest in their project, as well as get some help from the Android and webOS communities, since they need more TouchPad development devices, but are currently unable to find any, now that the fire sale has come and gone. So if you have an extra TouchPad you’d like to donate to the cause, let the CM team know.
