Dual screen tablets are an oddity in my mind. If you hold it like a book you can only read one panel at at time and if you set it down you might as well save some money and put in a keyboard, way cheaper then a touch screen. But if this is a route that you are thinking of going then you should come out with one version running Windows 7 and a cheaper version with Android. Reuters has reported that Toshiba is in fact working on such a scenario. If you haven’t seen a dual screen tablet yet, well MSI has put one on display at CES in Januray, interesting concept anyways. Toshiba also had a tablet on display at CES the JournE if you want to get a feel for what their tablets look like here is a link to that video.
Toshiba tablets are built for consuming media rather than creating it which makes sense because of their limited input capabilities. If you have to have one of these dual screen tablets the Android one makes alot more sense if only from a power consumption perspective. Its built for mobile devices so it doens’t consume as much power as hungry Windows 7 which is designed for desktops. Android is also built for touch input, and can run on low power ARM-based processors. And if you are going to throw it in the ring against Apple, Flash support is looking like a reality for Android. If you did go Windows you could run Office, Photoshop and other Windows apps that aren’t designed for a small mobile touch screen device. But if you wanted to plug in a keyboard to it you might be able to use it like a monitor.
That’s my take on dual screen tablets, what do you guys think? Here is the prototype from MSI just to give you an idea of what it might look like.
