The solar powered Samsung NC215 netbook, announced back in May and delayed to August has finally started shipping in the US with a suggested retail price of $399. Currently, you can grab it at a few places - Amazon, Buy.com and Beach Audio. J&R is still in pre-order mode, and it’s the only merchant to show pictures at the time of this posting.
This netbook is only offered in black, so the solar panel on the lid blends in with the rest of the design of which looks pretty similar (if not the same) to older Samsung netbooks with the same chiclet and single-bar trackpad. Some may be turned off by the 6-cell battery which juts out downwards but that’s nothing new with Samsung netbooks. The solar panel gives you an hour’s worth of run time for every 2 hours charged.
Specs wise it’s got a 10.1″ 1024 x 600 matte display, an Intel Atom N570 processor (dual-core, 1.5GHz) capable of 720p playback, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB HDD (5400RPM), integrated HD graphics, a 0.3MP webcam, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, stereo speakers, a 4-in-1 card reader, 3x USB 2.0 with one rechargeable, audio ports, VGA, RJ45, a 6-cell battery and Windows 7 Starter. It weighs 2.87 pounds and measures 0.93 – 1.41 inches thick.
