Intel had an earnings call yesterday, and once they’d finished announcing that they have earned all the available currency on Earth, CEO Paul Ottelini closed with this – “the next innovation coming out on Atom is dual core, which comes out in the second [fiscal] quarter.”.

Although we hate the disagree with someone so offensively rich, ‘innovation’ is probably not the right word here – the dual-core Netbook chip (the N500) will just be a re-badged D510 – the dual-core chip we’ve been seeing in Nettops for a while now – which itself isn’t a quantum leap.  It offers slightly improved performance and slightly lower power draw.  Still – progress is progress, and anything that gives us more processing power to play with is always welcome.

Is there really not any change from the D510? Cause the D510 draws over twice the watts of the N450. How is that innovation? What percent of a laptop's battery is used up by the processor and what by other things? Going from 10 hours down to 7 or so is ok but if a netbook is around 5 hours going below that is pushing it. Or am I missing something?
