Remember last year when the Indian government promised the world a $35 laptop? Well, in six short weeks we are supposed to find out what exactly is going on with the education bound device . Kapil Sibal, minister for human resource development says “All the naysayers will be unpleasantly surprised,” also noting that he had a device in his possession, only trouble is he left it at home so we still have no idea what this device is going to look like.
Mr. Sibal said last year that more than a million of the $35 laptops are going to be mass-produced, although when, where and by who are still a mystery. When the netboks get here they are to be sold to colleges and universities in India. The reason these tiny computer are so necessary is because India is facing an education crisis. There aren’t enough skilled teachers to meet the rising number of students. The hope is that online learning will help to bridge the gap.
Mr. Sibal’s office declined to divulge details of the manufacturers or whether production had begun. When pressed for specifics, Mamta Varma, the spokeswoman for the ministry, had the same answer: “You will get to know in six weeks.”
If you want to check out a news report from India on the $35 laptop (which actually looks alot like a tablet
