Speed Test: ASUS Eee PC 1001P vs Apple iPad

CNET has pitted an ASUS Eee PC 1001P with Windows 7 against the Apple iPad in a speed test for street cred. The iPad boots up faster than the 1001P at 23.1s vs 50.5s but to be honest I was surprised the iPad took that long to boot up.

If I were to have done the test I would have taken an netbook with an O/S optimized for netbooks like Jolicloud which boots up in 23.4 seconds. A time comparable to the boot of the iPad. But having said that most netbooks come running Windows 7 and have HDD rather then SSDs. If you were running a Jolicloud Operating System with an SSD but this was an average test with average netbook hardware.

The video also takes a look at Safari loading up a webpage on both resulted in a draw at 5.4s. Minus Flash on the iPad, but the browsing experience via touch is superior on the iPad vs on a tablet netbook. Javascript benchmarks showed the general processing performance of the 1001P is superior at 2272 ms vs 12,591 ms on the iPad.

Just another example of a biased promotional review for the iPad…

The test is unfair on several counts, the netbook is using a hard drive and not a SSD like the iPad is. Jolicloud can boot in as little as 13 seconds on a SSD equipped netbook. And the test is with a netbook running a full OS versus the iPad's much easier to run smartphone based OS.

There was no mention of the iPad's limited RAM, which some users have already noted is making it hard to run certain apps, or how long term use could effect the user with such problems as neck strain from the awkward angles it has to be used in and how typing is harder on the iPad's screen versus a real keyboard.

Nor was their any mention of the limited durability of the iPad, as many have already noted the aluminum case is easy to dent and a small drop to even a carpeted floor can still damage the screen despite it being scratch resistant and a fall from a standing position onto a hard surface will smash the glass of the screen.

And none of that even covers the price difference… especially by the time you get all the accessories for the iPad you can easily have spent up to four times the cost of the netbook.

I agree CyberGusa. The netbook cost much less than the Ipad and for the difference of the price could easily be upgraded to get well beyond the performance of the iPad with a crazy fast SSD.
Another thing is that he used Safari on both devices but on the netbook he could easily pick a faster browser to pull ahead even more.
For me, after reinterpreting the results myself, this was really refreshing. I expected the iPad to perform much better. Now I know that a netbook/netvirtable with a good SSD and a good browser like Chrome will be better in almost ever way than an ipad. Just weight and battery life which I think it would more than make up for in added performance and functionality.
    A 32gb Ipad is $600
    A t101mt is $465+32gb Vertex $80+2gb RAM $50= $595
I know which one I would pick.

    Here Here! I agree completely!

I am sick of people telling me that the iPad will replace netbooks, even if it wasn’t substandard hardware they are different usage scenarios!
